South West Cyclocross League 2025/26 Round 10 - Sun, 11th January
Arlington Cyclocross – Last Call for CX
A brand new venue for the last round of the SWCX season and a very abrupt change from last week’s race. All grass (some sections much softer than others!) and a couple of short sections of very loose gravel trails. Who doesn’t love a sudden terrain change mid corner?!?!
Lucy stepped up to the plate and took on here first ever CX race. This is what she has to say about the whole experience.
“Arlington – the last chance to give cyclocross a go this season – gave me exactly the FOMO I needed to get myself onto a start line. New course, no expectations… perfect.
On arrival I met up with teammates Will and Lisa, who talked me through the basics and gave loads of encouragement (very much needed!). We were greeted by a very windy course, packed with tight turns — more than I expected, although I wasn’t entirely sure what I was expecting anyway.
A practice lap gave me the confidence boost I needed. I knew I could get round, so the goal became simple: steady through the corners, let the bike roll on the downhills, and keep moving forward. Riding the course on a mountain bike definitely helped in places, but the sticky, muddy flat sections made sure I worked for it!
With one lap to go, I’ll admit the pits looked tempting… but the wind on the hill made me think otherwise. One more lap, a big push, and I crossed the finish line smiling — first cyclocross race done!
Coming from a triathlon background, my bike handling is best described as “artic lorry-esque,” but that’s all part of the fun. Cyclocross is welcoming, chaotic, challenging, and brilliant — and I can’t wait to give it another go next season.
If you’re even thinking about racing… this is your sign. Just get on the start line”
Lisa, Jez and Will finished off their CX season pushing hard through to the last lap. Plenty of sore legs and red faces on the finish line.
Next up, it’s XC season.
