circular economy

We are aware that professional cycling has an issue with wastage of bike products and refuse such as energy bars, gels etc. We are committed to have a comprehensive circular economy in place before the end of this current 2023 season and have already made significant steps in this direction.

  1. We have commissioned the University of Exeter to undertake a root and branch review of the wastage in Saint Piran Pro Cycling. This includes bike products such as chains and bearings. We have also looked at our carbon frames and working with our wheel partner Pacenti Cycle Design.

  2. The University of Exeter has provided their report to us and we are now looking at how to take that forward, in partnership with the University.

  3. We have put a requirement in our code of conduct for all riders to return their waste consumables such as tyres, chains etc. back to the team so they can be recycled and kept out of general waste

  4. The team has been investigating the best use of bicycle tyres once they have been used and investigated a number of start-up grants to help local artists to start businesses making belts and other personal accessories. Taking on board professional advice regarding the chemical compounds of tyres and the unknown impact long-term wearing of similar rubbers could have, we have decided not to move in this direction. We are in discussions with Schwalbe, our tyre sponsor, to investigate how we can make use of their recycling capabilities.

  5. We already recycle some of our used bike chains in Cornwall, sending them to jewellers to make into specific cycle-related jewellery.

We will continue to update and share our work in this space.
