Lewis tries MTB XC and the Cannondale Scalpel HT for the first time

I’m Lewis, I’m 32, and this season I’ve officially joined the Saint Piran Service Course team. A few weeks ago, I found myself standing on the sidelines watching some of the team race XC mountain bike events. I’d always been more comfortable on the road and gravel, so seeing my teammates flying through technical sections, smashing climbs and absolutely loving every second of it sparked something in me. That’s when I decided it was time to step out of my comfort zone and start training properly for XC racing myself.

Saint Piran Service Course set me up with the Cannondale Scalpel HT 3, and it’s been a game changer for my confidence and riding progression. I haven’t had loads of downhill experience before, so I was slightly nervous about getting into technical trails and faster descents. But straight away, the Scalpel HT felt predictable and easy to control. It climbs incredibly fast and smooth, which is exactly what you want in XC training, especially when you’re trying to keep up with riders who’ve been racing off-road for years. On climbs it just goes – light, responsive, and eager to be pushed harder every ride.

Most of my training has been with friends and teammates, and that’s honestly been the best part of the whole experience. Learning new skills together, sessioning sections we used to avoid, and gradually building confidence has made riding more fun than ever. There’s something special about pushing yourself when you’re surrounded by people who want to see you improve. Whether it’s line choice, cornering, or tackling technical descents, every ride feels like a mini coaching session mixed with a laugh and a coffee stop afterwards.

What I’ve really noticed is how versatile the Scalpel HT 3 is. It’s quick enough for race training but forgiving enough for someone still developing their technical ability. It’s helped bridge that gap between road fitness and off-road confidence. I can focus on improving my riding without feeling like the bike is holding me back. Instead, it encourages me to try things I wouldn’t have attempted before – steeper climbs, tighter turns, and faster trails.

Looking ahead to this season, I’m genuinely excited to race both on and off the road. XC racing is a new challenge for me, but that’s exactly why I wanted to get involved. Being part of Saint Piran Service Course has opened the door to a whole new side of cycling that I probably wouldn’t have explored on my own. The team atmosphere, the support, and the shared goal of getting better together makes every training ride feel purposeful. It’s not just about results – it’s about progression, experience, and enjoying the ride.

If you’re thinking about getting into XC racing or just want a bike that’s fast, fun and confidence-inspiring, the Cannondale Scalpel HT 3 is an incredible place to start. And if you’re looking for a team that supports riders at every level, Saint Piran Service Course is exactly that. Watching my teammates race pushed me to try something new, and now I’m lining up alongside them. This season is about learning, racing, and having fun – and I can’t wait to see where it takes me
