Alexandre Mayer wins at the African Games
Everyone at Saint Piran is immensely proud of our own Alexandre Mayer, who rode to victory at the African Games in Accra on Sunday. This win represents a remarkable achievement both for himself and his country of Mauritius.
Alexandre clinched the gold medal in a thrilling display of strength and strategy. As the peloton crossed 100 kilometres, Mayer, along with five other riders, executed a daring breakaway, moving ahead of the main group and setting the stage for a gripping finale.
In the breakaway, Mayer showcased his tactical skill, contributing tirelessly to maintain the group’s advantage. Sharing the workload with three other riders, he led the charge, driving the pace and ensuring they stayed ahead of the chasing pack.
As they entered the final stretch, Mayer launched into his sprint. With unmatched speed and determination, he surged ahead - crossing the finish line with arms raised in triumph - leaving the other riders to fight for the podium spots.
Behind him, Dillon Geary of South Africa and Merhawi Kudus of Eritrea battled for the remaining podium spots, showcasing the incredible talent and competitiveness of the African cycling scene.
“Firstly and foremost, I'm delighted by this outstanding result for Alexandre. Our investment to define a pathway both in the UK and globally for young riders is central to Saint Piran’s DNA. Alex has had to sacrifice a lot to come to the UK to be part of our USKIS development team, with aspirations to be selected for the Continental team. In light of this remarkable performance, we have earmarked him for a spot on the UCI continental team this year.” - Richard Pascoe
