Below, Will shares his thoughts on the past few weeks in his race report
“I have had a fantastic few week's in Europe with the National team. We kicked off with the first round of the Paracycling World Cup Series in Italy 🇮🇹 having had some nice training days in the Dolomites for final prep. The Time Trial was very much a what could have been, I started out at the effort planned but a puncture on a fast descent led to a small off and a frustrating DNF less than ten minutes into the race. I knew I was in good condition though and the road race two days later provided me the opportunity to prove myself. I didn't disappoint following the splits on the climbs to stay in the front group and then working with some rivals to bring back a dangerous move by two key riders that lull you get when a catch is made have me the perfect time to launch my own attack with around 3 laps to go with a lap and half I was joined by three of the pre-race favourites we worked together until the finale where a four-man sprint over the cobbles was unleashed myself placing third.
We then travelled to Belgium for a UCI C1 race and the second World Cup which followed a week later. The majority of the riders who raced in Italy also started the Vlaanderen Classic so a stacked field and lumpy parcours had me very excited. The race rolled out for an 8km neutral zone to exit Brugge once the flag dropped it was on. Around 5km in Brazilian rider (ex world champion) Lauro Ceaser Chaman attacked and seeing an opportunity I jumped across to him on my own as we passed through a narrow set of countryside lanes. We then working together till the end where he managed to out sprint me for the win. Second place I'm getting closer I thought.
The next week the World Cup kicked off for me with the Time Trial. I stated well but went through a bad patch mid race and dropped off the powers we had planned, unable to get back on top of the effort I rolled home a frustrated 8th just under two mins off the win. I was determined to end this block on a positive note and animate the road race. Seeing an opportunity to launch an attack on lap two of eleven I went for it being joined by former European champion Franz Lasser we left everything out there to build a sizeable advantage which we held onto the majority off until the final two laps. As we entered the final run to the line Franz led us out and kicked hard, with 100 to go I went full gas and the legs to take the win and get enough of a gap to celebrate in style my first road World Cup win”.
The whole of the Saint Piran family would like to congratulate Will Bjergfelt on his sucesses and look forward to seeing him back in the Saint Piran jersey soon.
