Saint Piran go 1,2 and 3 at the first race of 2023
It’s the opening day of the race season in the UK with what many call a semi-classic road race due to its longevity, it’s now been in existence for 58 editions, namely the Perfs pedal race. The race has a mixture of professional and elite amateur riders, it’s the first chance to see who has some early season form ahead of the top national races coming in the next couple of months.
With over 80 starters it’s often difficult to predict who is likely to win. Saint Piran however, had designs on surprising many in the UK with a standout performance. The race set out over tough, undulating countryside in Hampshire, this against the backdrop of cool temperatures meant for a tough day for all riders. Team tactics were for Saint Piran to be represented in each of the major breaks of the day, when an early break started to establish itself Saint Piran were not represented within it so had to take the race by the scruff of the neck to have riders within the leading group. Jack Rootkin-Gray and Harry Birchill bridged over to the break, this impartus gave the remaining Saint Piran rider, Zeb Kyffin, his motivation to get into what was proving to be the race winning move of the day. Once Zeb Kyffin had joined this group it was down to Saint Piran to split these numbers into a manageable size, essentially a group of 7 needed to be whittled down for final selection.
By placing a large number of attacks from the group and working together, Saint Piran achieved the aim which landed a very impressive 1, 2, 3 on the line. With victory going to Jack Rootkin-Gray who outsprinted Harry Birchill, whilst smiling Zeb Kyffin rolled over the line whilst pointing to his jersey.
