25 mile TT course record for Lampier
Saint Piran’s Steve Lampier rode to a course record at the Giant Helston 25 on Sunday in a time of 48:30.
He was 31 seconds clear of his nearest rival and in the process smashed the three-year-old course record by almost three and a half minutes. This was his second TT triumph in a fortnight after winning the Saint Piran 10 at the end of August.
There were several outstanding elements to Steve’s ride.
First, it’s only 16 weeks since he sustained multiple injuries in a potentially career-changing training accident. Secondly this was his debut time trial at this distance, and finally, it was only his second race on his new bike.
Time trialling is a specialist activity with riders separated by one minute intervals over a set course. Specialised low profile bikes are normally used to minimise wind resistance, and Saint Piran has been working with Italian bike manufacturer Colnago on such a machine - the K.one.
“At Saint Piran, we strive to give our riders the best opportunities and equipment to compete at the highest level”, said Steve. “Colnago gives us an edge, meaning we can compete with confidence. I’ve spent a couple of weeks dialling in my position, working with technical support from Luke at Windwave (Colnago’s UK distributor). Between us I believe we’ve produced one of the fastest bikes in the UK. Of course I still have to pedal it”, he says with a smile!
Saint Piran Team principal Richard Pascoe added:
“It is a relief to be racing again and to be able to support our riders. Mental health is an important factor with young riders and something we are very conscious of as a team. Enabling riders to return to a level of normality within their cycling career is vital. It’s a big relief to have time trials and some limited racing underway again and it’s something we are very keen to support”
