Ollie Maxwell grabs third in the Jock Wadley Memorial Race

Saint Piran’s Ollie Maxwell got his season off to a strong start with a third place finish in the early season classic held in Colchester, Essex.

The long-standing National B road race was run over a 134km course, with 80 riders lining up at the start. Ollie was part of an early break of 10 riders, but a larger group joined before half a dozen split off again in the cross-winds with about 80km to go. “Attacks started to happen with three laps to go, but nothing was sticking”, said Ollie.

Three riders were left to contend the uphill sprint to the finish, with Ollie making the first move. However, he was caught by Thomas Heal and Isaac Mundy before the line and had to settle for a highly respectable third place.

Ollie said: “I felt strong all race pulling strong turns, and I know I have a good turn of speed towards the finish, so I left it to the sprint. But I went too early - with about 300m to go - and finished third. A good, solid day though.”

Congratulations to OIlie and here’s to a great season ahead.
