RIDING STYLE: MTB Cross Country, Cyclocross and gravel
BIO
I've been riding a bicycle for over 40 years, initially it was to explore and gain independence and to just get away from it all, getting to and from school and earning a few bob on my paper round (remember those)?
I started fixating on a Raleigh Record Sprint racing bike in the Gratton catalogue when I was about 14 and after months of persistence I got this lovely bike for Christmas. It was my pride and joy! Following on from this, around 1985 I joined my first bicycle club which was Wolverhampton Wheelers. Here I was introduced to proper club rides where no one got dropped and the older experienced club members nurtured you in the art of road craft.
Since those early days I've fully embraced every aspect of cycling over the years, competitive and non competitive - Evening club time trials, road racing, duathlon, triathlon and even long distance European Cycle touring. Around 1993 in my 20's I started MTB racing in the South West (remember those days without suspension). This gravitated to tandem racing off and on road, I'd like to say we were the early pioneers - a memory that sticks in my head is descending the Pipeline at Newnham Park, Plymouth on the back of Rob's tandem.
In the 2007 I discovered Cyclocross when disc brakes weren't a thing, I travelled all over the country to compete in the National Trophy events and by then I'd moved on from Plymouth Corinthians and has joined Welland Valley Cycling Club which was and still is CX orientated under the tutorage of Dean Barnett, coach extraordinaire.
In 2023 I returned to competitive cycling and a chance meeting with Ricci Pascoe at a Circuit race near Exeter drew me towards his enthusiasm and visions for the future by working from grass roots upwards and involving the wider cycle community. I joined 05/03 and raced road, gravel and of course cyclocross. I’ve had a few successes and hope to keep improving along the way at the same time flying the flag for Saint Piran Cycling and Saint Piran Service Course.
