It was March 2012 when my brother (now a cycling coach and commentator in Eurosport) took part in his first race ever in the Greek cycling calendar and asked me to travel with him so that I could provide support, since his team at that time, didn’t have any staff meant for this task.
A hobbyist photographer as I was, I took my camera with me, without having the slightest idea about road cycling or sports photography in general. I followed the race, giving some bidons, some energy gels, and eventually took some photos too, from the car’s sunroof. Some of them didn’t turn out to be that bad, and thus the journey began.
Fast forward to the present, and I find myself having surpassed the milestone of 500 race days shooting all disciplines of cycling in Greece: road, MTB, gravel, track. I try to be present at whatever important happens in cycling in my country (and recently in Cyprus too), travelling around Greece on most weekends (or whole weeks) of the year. Add to this a few World and European championships abroad and you get the whole picture.
In 2017 I created The Cycling Journal (www.thecyclingjournal.gr, although more active in social media @thecyclingjournal.gr), a website with race reports and interviews about our beloved sport, where I have the joy of hosting the best cycling writers in Greece.
All these years, I had the chance to try many other sports as well, but cycling stays on top: it is by far the most beautiful sport of all, a true photographer’s playground!
