Round 2 - Saint Piran SW Women’s Race League
We headed to Cornwall for round 2, a circuit that perhaps isn’t as well known as many others - Wheal Jane. For us, it’s our local circuit and one that we are big fans of due to its location and exposure as well as its variety! You get climbs, descents and corners, a bit of everything!
This round clashed with a couple of other events so we expected there to be fewer entrants but we were happy to see 7 on the start line. Yet again a mixture of more experienced riders through to those new to racing and all 7 who started were already signed up to the race league! We again started the race with 3 neutralised laps, this just ensured everyone was settled and at the very least everyone gained some experience of riding around the circuit together. The whistle blew after lap three to signal the start and it wasn’t long before Catriona attacked followed by Hannah. A group of 4 formed behind and then reduced to 3. By the time this group started working efficiently there was too much of a gap to catch the front two. This group consisted of Jenny, Natalie and Emily who took the opportunity to practice race craft, cornering, working together and sharing tips. After an hour of racing, Catriona attacked on the final climb, taking the win from Hannah. Jenny won the sprint with Natalie and Emily coming in behind, followed by Kerry and then Annette.
A great afternoon of racing, great weather, although a nice headwind up the drag to the finish! A huge thank you to the organisers and volunteers from Wheal Velocity and thank you to all who took part.
Round 3 will be at Ilton on 10th April
