"I wanted to win it!" Steve Lampier is the National Masters Champion
Saint Piran team leader Steve Lampier won the Men’s National Masters Championships on a wet and windy 60 mile course in Lancashire on Saturday.
The race was split into three categories of riders - depending on age - who all competed on the same course. Lampier not only won his category but was first across the line overall in 2:27.39, three minutes and 45 seconds ahead of the second place rider.
Steve knew he would be a marked man, saying, “I wanted to win it! But i knew everyone would be watching me so had to take the race to them.”
Simon Wilson (Ribble Pro Cycling) was the main threat. Steve says:
“First time on the main climb I dug in and got away. Si was chasing, and I’ve known hime for more than 10 years. He’s a very strong time trialist and has a good sprint in these types of races. So I rode a hard tempo and made him work to catch me. I did one and a half laps with him, and, since I knew he was stronger on the climb, with three laps to go, I pressed on.”
That turned into a 60km solo break for Steve to win both his category and the overall race.
Summing up, he says; “I’m really happy. It was a hard race on the Oakenclough circuit, especially with the bad weather.”
