Lampier triumphs, with two other Saint Piran riders in the top five in the South West Championships
Fresh from their outstanding performance in the Ovo Energy Race Series, Cornwall’s Saint Piran pro cycling team took three of the top five places in the South West Region Road Championships in Davidstow on 2nd June.
On a day when the weather added to the challenge of the 80 mile course, Saint Piran team leader Steve Lampier won the sprint to the line, with team-mate Will Harper close behind in second place and development rider Ross Holland in fifth.
The undulating course along the north Cornish coast‘s Atlantic Highway was exposed to the full force of the weather and proved to be a decisive factor in the race. A lone break by George Fowler might have been a winning move on another day but in a war of attrition, a group of 12 riders bridged the gap to the Nopinz Symec Race Team on the fifth lap.
With 30 miles to go, that group was reduced to five, with the three Saint Piran riders joined by Adam Toole (VC Equipe) and Tom Nancarrow (Nopinz Symec). In the tactical battle that followed, the in-form Nancarrow was the man to watch, but Saint Piran’s Ross Holland fought hard to haul his powerful frame over the climbs to soften up the competing teams’ riders. And Will Harper, in his first race after a bout of illness, showed grit and ability with repeated attacks.
And so it was Lampier who took line honours, adding another jersey to his growing collection. With Harper and Holland close behind, it was a very good day for Saint Piran.
